The Equity Deconstructed STEAM research class that was launched for the 2021-2022 school year by seven Monta Vista High School educators, primarily taught by Fremont Union High School District’s science curriculum lead, Kavita Gupta, is focused on interdisciplinary, equity-centered research and project design.
Supported by the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation, this dual enrollment course is a unique learning experience for our students to conduct an independent research project and initiate positive change in their community while earning high school and college credit.
Students chose their own research topic and created their project using the Stanford d School’s Design Thinking Process, which includes conducting empathy interviews with community members and peers. Students considered multiple perspectives while researching nuanced topics with the assistance of an adult mentor.
The students will present their research findings on May 13, 2022 at the MV STEAM Exploration Showcase and Symposium, a student-led event.
As a team, we envisioned a course where students could learn more about issues related to equity, social and emotional learning, antiracism and anti-bias, with an eye towards finding a problem in our own community and creating potential solutions to address it.
