I am a computer science teacher, an artist, a hacker and a mother. I am part of the Technical Arts faculty at Lick-Wilmerding High School, in San Francisco. Our program combines computing, electronics and digital fabrication with traditional crafts like wood and metal shop, jewelry-making and sewing. Students learn technical skills by designing and building creative projects. I came into the computer science field via fine art, and I am self-taught. It took me a long time to feel like I belonged in the room. I am passionate about opening the door for students who might not self-identify as coders. I am excited about models for teaching and making that are collaborative and creative, that allow us to move slowly and make all the mistakes.
