Description Of Event Activities

The KCI Makerspace is a creative space with high-tech equipment, powered tools, and instruments that may be sharp, hot, or otherwise cause injury if handled improperly. The space may have low-level exposures to chemicals that may cause cancer, dust, or other environmental hazards.

Types Of Risks Involved With The Activity

Bodily injury, including burns, cuts, punctures, respiratory distress, permanent scarring & disfigurement, personal injury, death. Personal property damage or loss.

In consideration of my participation in the voluntary, extracurricular activity described above, I hereby agree to assume all risk of any kind of injury, harm or loss that may result from my participation in any Makerspace-related activities, including property damage, bodily injury, personal injury or death.

I understand that some risks are inherent in the use of power and hand tools or while making and fixing things in general, and that some other risks may arise from conditions, situations, or activities of which I am presently unaware.

I understand that my use of the tools and equipment involves some risk of injury, particularly when used incorrectly or unsafely by myself or other makers and that I must complete the necessary training, wear the appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment, and properly use the equipment and tools while completing any Makerspace activities.

With full understanding of the risks involved and understanding the full implications of signing this Release, I, or I on behalf of my heirs and assignees, am willing to participate and use the tools and equipment.

I therefore agree to undergo all required training and exercise extreme caution and care in using the tools and equipment, including following all Makerspace Rules and Regulations as well as follow verbal instructions provided by Makerspace staff and its instructors.

I agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the Krause Center for Innovation and Foothill College, its officers, agents, and employees (collectively referred to hereinafter as “KCI/Foothill”) from and against any and all claims, demands, causes of action, or liabilities for damages, personal injury, death, or property damage, arising, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from my participation in the Maker activities, except as may arise from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of KCI/Foothill.

I further agree to release KCI/Foothill from any and all claims for any damages, including property damage, injury, or death occurring or arising out of the Maker Activities, except as may be caused by KCI/Foothill’s gross negligence or willful misconduct.

I agree to abide by the Maker Rules and Regulations and acknowledge having received a copy thereof. Further, I agree that I will be held financially responsible for any damage to the tools or equipment, which is caused by my activities.

I give my permission for Foothill College to use photographs or videotape of me for the purpose of promoting the Krause Center for Innovation / Foothill College and its services/programs. I understand no compensation will be paid now or in the future for the use of my likeness.

Consent is hereby given to staff to seek or give medical aid as required in the case of an emergency. I hereby authorize Foothill College Makerspace staff and/or administrators to give consent for all medical and/or surgical treatment that may be required.

General Rules And Regulations

  1. Wear properly fitted attire and closed-toed shoes at all times. Tie up long hair and remove any dangling jewelry.
  2. Wear eye protection when using construction tools, soldering, or anything else that could cause eye injury. Ask a staff member if you need safety glasses.
  3. Do dusty or fume-producing work (e.g., with wood, paint) outside on the concrete area around the building. Ask staff if unsure.
  4. Use equipment safely and only for its intended purpose. Ask for help if unsure. Complete tool-specific training before first use.
  5. Do not share tools with unauthorized or untrained users. Report unsafe use to staff immediately.
  6. Inspect tools before use. Report any damage to staff. Do not use broken or malfunctioning tools.
  7. Never leave the laser cutter unattended. Always confirm which machines can be left running.
  8. Do not distract others using tools. No horseplay. Be aware of your surroundings and actions.
  9. Report any accident or incident to a staff member immediately.
  10. Return all checked-out tools to the front counter. Do not pass tools to others.
  11. Use materials responsibly to reduce waste.
  12. Follow all Foothill College health and safety protocols while in the Makerspace.

Equipment Use And Reservations

The Makerspace includes six areas: Crafting, Wearables, Electronics, Computing, Physical Design, and Fabrication. Each area requires specific training before use.

Use of the space, tools, and equipment is based on reservations. Walk-in users can reserve on-site if space is available. Occupancy is limited to 35 people.

  1. Sign in at the front desk and get your name tag from a staff member.
  2. Log out of personal accounts on shared computers before leaving.
  3. Return all checked-out equipment to the front counter.
  4. Keep all tools and materials in the Makerspace. Return them to their designated spots before leaving.
  5. Clean up your area before leaving. Let staff know if you damaged anything or had trouble cleaning up.
  6. Begin cleaning up at least 15 minutes before closing. Do not stay past closing hours.

Important Space Information

KCI and/or Foothill College may suspend access for anyone who fails to follow the rules. Any safety hazard or perceived threat may result in immediate termination of access at staff discretion.

Use of the Makerspace is for discovery, learning, entertainment, and prototyping — not commercial production. Dangerous or illegal items are prohibited. Members are responsible for following intellectual property laws.
