Celebrating KCI MERIT Graduates at the Common Sense Media Awards

December 1, 2023

The recent Common Sense Media Awards marked not just the 20th anniversary of an influential event but also a momentous occasion for educators, particularly those from the KCI community who graduated from the MERIT program. This year’s event, sparkling with glamour and inspirational stories, recognized individuals making a substantial impact on the lives of children and families.

A Star-Studded Affair

Hosted by the charismatic Martin Short, the awards ceremony was nothing short of spectacular. The guest list included notable figures like U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy and actor/activist Rosario Dawson, alongside community leaders John H.N. Fisher and Jennifer Caldwell. However, the spotlight was exceptionally bright on educators like Genevieve Chan, Cicely A. Day Butler, and Laurie Wong-Roberts, whose dedication to teaching and learning resonates deeply with our values at KCI.

Among these educators were KCI’s own graduates of the MERIT (Making Education Relevant through Innovative Teaching) program. This program, known for its rigorous and innovative approach to professional development in education technology, has been instrumental in shaping educators who are well-equipped to handle the challenges of modern classrooms. The acknowledgment of our graduates at such a prestigious event is a testament to their hard work, commitment, and the transformative power of the MERIT program.

The evening was further embellished by performances from poet Imani Cezanne and musicians like Robert McDuffie, Mike Mills, Chuck Leavell, and James DePrato. The highlight was a moving performance by singer Calum Scott, accompanied by student singers from Lowell High. These performances underscored the event’s theme of creative expression and its importance in education and personal development.

As we celebrate these achievements, it’s also a time to look forward. The recognition of our MERIT graduates at the Common Sense Media Awards is not just an honor; it’s a reminder of the impact educators have on shaping the future. We’re inspired to continue supporting our educators in their journey, offering programs that empower them to bring innovation and passion into their classrooms.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the award recipients, with a special shoutout to our KCI graduates. Your dedication to enriching the lives of students does not go unnoticed. Here’s to many more years of inspiring education!
